A Fairfield woman received an alumni award from Salve Regina University in Newport, R.I., for founding a group that uses theater to build sensitivity to social problems.

Magda Skomal Nyiri, a 1987 graduate, was presented the university's Alumni Achievement Award during its reunion weekend.

She founded Interactive Educational Theatre Inc., whose mission Salve Regina said is, "to perform culturally sensitive, educational presentations" on topics such as drug and alcohol abuse, AIDS, bullying, dating violence, body image and diversity.
