Ann McCarthy, of Fairfield, has been appointed as the new director of development and communications for the Human Services Council, a Norwalk-based nonprofit that focuses on creating a healthy community for families and children.

McCarthy has more than 20 years of experience in marketing, public relations and strategic planning, in both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors. "Her wealth of experience in communications and marketing will help the Human Services Council effectively convey the community's needs," said Anthony DiLauro, executive director of the nonprofit organization.

McCarthy has worked in marketing and public relations for companies including Hachette Book Group, John Wiley & Sons and Oxford University Press. She previously served as the managing director of the Southfield Center for Development in Darien, where she was responsible for day-to-day operations, marketing/community outreach and strategic planning.

The Human Services Council's programs have focused on alcohol and drug prevention, supportive housing, child advocacy, homelessness, hunger, medical and behavioral health care for children and adolescents and mentoring.
