A Fairfield man who helped to rescue a young child and dog from a burning house in Bridgeport late last year was honored by area lawmakers during a ceremony at the state Capitol this month.
Tom DeLaurentis and other volunteers on Dec. 12 rushed into the blazing house at 951 Capitol Ave. and rescued 2-year-old Mikey Ham, according to news reports. DeLaurentis then re-entered the building to get the dog.
DeLaurentis owns Daybreak Donuts on Madison Avenue in Bridgeport, about one-half block from the fire scene. He and others who had gathered in front of the burning house rushed inside when they heard cries for help.
"I'm no hero. I'm just a father," DeLaurentis said in the release. "I just reacted. That's all."
Kupchick said Fairfield is proud of him.
"He doesn't like all this attention. Frankly, real heroes never do," she said.
