With Republican state Sen. John McKinney, R-28, exploring a possible run for governor next year, state Rep. Kim Fawcett, D-133, has formed an exploratory committee to investigate a possible candidacy for her fellow Fairfield resident's seat.
Fawcett, in her fourth term in the state House of Representatives, has filed papers with the state Elections Enforcement Commission declaring her intent to explore a run for a seat in the General Assembly's upper chamber next year.
"I am opening a new chapter in my political journey by establishing this exploratory committee and will spend the next several months considering my options for the 2014 election cycle," Fawcett said in her statement. "It's inspiring to spend my days working on policy changes to improve the lives of women, children and our families, and I am excited about the opportunity to continue that work with greater outreach."
The 28th state Senate district, which includes Fairfield, Easton, Weston, Newtown and a small section of Westport, has not sent a Democrat to Hartford for decades.
While McKinney has announced he will seek the GOP nomination for governor, he has not ruled out running for re-election to the state Senate should those plans change.
