Before the Board of Finance began its quarterly review of town finances Tuesday night, Chairman Thomas Flynn took a moment to pass out baseball caps to fellow board members.

But the caps didn't bear the logo of a major league baseball team, or even a favorite college team. The blue caps, emblazoned with "Fairfield Police," were a show of support for the men and women who wear the blue uniforms of the Fairfield Police Department.

Flynn, who purchased the caps with his own money, said he wanted to show that the finance board stands behind the department, especially in the context of recent events elsewhere in the nation, such as New York, Mississippi and, most recently, Baltimore.

In his remarks, Flynn noted that in the last several months, police officers have been targeted and "assassinated" and commended the local police for the training they receive for their sometimes-dangerous job in the community.
