Police are investigating an incident Thursday where they said a man tried to use counterfeit $20 bills at BJ's Wholesale Club, 40 Black Rock Turnpike.
According to the report, a woman who opened a personal BJ's account the day before, came back to the store and asked to change it to a business account. When that was done, the woman, who used a Louisiana driver's license, turned the card's account over to a man who tried to buy $206 worth of merchandise with 10 counterfeit bills, police said.
An alert about the account had just been issued because it was used at the BJ's in Derby by three people who used counterfeit money to purchase two iPads and a $100 gift card, according to the report. The suspects in Derby left the scene in a black Ford sedan with New York license plates.
The Fairfield cashier, as a result, refused the bills, and the man left the store without the merchandise -- or the fake money.
