George Gilbert Davis Rockwell, 89, of Fairfield, died June 19 in Norwalk Hospital.

A long-time Fairfield resident who most recently lived in the Southport section of town, he was a graduate of Phillips Academy Andover and Bowdoin College. After serving as an officer in World War II, he worked as an executive at Remington Arms Co. for 30 years.

In the community, he had been an officer with the Connecticut Audubon Society for many years and, for 22 years, was president of the Greenfield Hill Village Improvement Society. He enjoyed playing tennis, golf and riding his bike.

Survivors include his partner, Helen Starbuck Moore; a son, David Hadley Rockwell and Nancy Ney and their daughter Joanna Ney Rockwell; a daughter Jane Rockwell, her daughter Brett Rugg, son-in law Bill Rugg and their two children; a daughter, Anne Rockwell, and a son, Jonathan Davis Rockwell, his son Ryan Henry Rockwell and daughter Renee Hadley Rockwell. He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Martha Hadley Rockwell, in 1998.

Funeral services will be private.
