A new health clinic to provide care for the treatment of a variety of common illnesses and preventative health care has opened in the Super Stop & Shop supermarket, 1160 Kings Highway Cutoff.

The grocery store chain has partnered with Norwalk Hospital's FastCare to operate the walk-in clinic inside the store.

The FastCare clinic, staffed by Norwalk Hospital nurse practitioners and physician assistants, offers health care for minor conditions and symptoms, including sore throats, fevers, flu and colds, ear and sinus infections, pink eye, skin rashes and allergies.

A report following each visit is sent to a patient's primary care physician and immediate referrals are made to a physician when symptoms exceed the clinic's scope of services.

Shoppers can take a pager and be alerted for their clinic appointments while they shop, according to information provided by Stop & Shop.

"Cost, quality and accessibility are extremely important to us at Norwalk Hospital," said Dr. Michael R. Marks, the hospital's vice president of business development. "This partnership will enable us to better serve local residents."

"This concept increases accessibility to health care at a low, set cost and adds value for our customers," said Arlene Putterman, manager, community relations for Stop & Shop's New York Metro Division.

FastCare accepts most insurance, and office visit co-pays apply. For those with high deductible insurance plans or no coverage, a FastCare visit is $82, including simple lab tests. In addition, pharmacy service can be provided by the Stop & Shop pharmacy.

Hours for the FastCare clinic are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sundays and holidays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
