Henry B. Haitz III has been named group publisher and president of Hearst Connecticut Newspapers. The announcement was made by Steven R. Swartz, president and CEO of Hearst Corporation, and Hearst Newspapers President Mark Aldam. Haitz, 49, begins his new position on January 6 and will report to Aldam.
Haitz will have responsibility for the operating performance across Hearst’s network of media companies in the state, which includes four dailies (Connecticut Post in Bridgeport, The News-Times in Danbury, The Advocate in Stamford and Greenwich Time) and seven weekly newspapers in Fairfield County. Since 2006, Haitz was president and publisher of The State Media Company, South Carolina’s leading source of daily news and information, reaching nearly 400,000 newspaper readers and 1.2 million unique website visitors. He led a 215-person organization, including editors, sales managers, finance and human resource professionals, production managers and new media directors, among others.
“Henry possesses the perfect core experience to lead our cluster of local media assets in Connecticut,” Aldam said. “He has experience launching new products, growing print and digital audiences, and increasing revenue across various platforms. We are excited to welcome him to Hearst and to the Connecticut team.”
Prior to The State, from 2004 to 2006 Haitz served as president and publisher of The (Bradenton, Fla.) Herald, Manatee County’s leading source of daily news and information. At The Herald, he was responsible for overall leadership and management of the newspaper, 226-person staff, website and specialty media products.
From 1996 to 2003, he held various senior management positions leading up to being named president and publisher of the Centre Daily Times in State College, Penn. Earlier in his career, Haitz was controller of the Press-Telegram in Long Beach, Calif. and CFO of Suburban Newspapers of Greater St. Louis, controller of the Morning Journal in Lorain, Ohio, and business manager of The Mercury in Pottstown, Penn.
Haitz has an MBA from The Pennsylvania State University and a bachelor’s from Bloomsburg University (Penn.). He succeeds Paul Farrell who departed the company on October 1.
