FAIRFIELD — Fairfield went to — and for — the dogs Sunday afternoon at the Walk With Harold and Friends dog walk and fun fest held to benefit the town’s Police K-9 Unit and Black Rock School in Bridgeport.

“This is just to bring awareness to the public that the Fairfield Police K-9 Unit is 100 percent public funded,” said Sgt. Hector Irizarry, noting that training, equipment and even veterinarian bills all come through the public donations.

Despite a rainy start, dozens of dogs and their owners enjoyed together time, a costume contest, music, and a walk along the beach. Afterward the police department put on some canine demonstrations.

“Without the public support,” Irizarry said, “we would not be able to function as a K-9 unit.”
