The Junior Women's Club of Fairfield said it has awarded a total of $13,000 to two nonprofit groups from proceeds of its primary fundraiser, A Visit to Santa's House, in December.
The club said it awarded checks for $11,000 to the Cardinal Shehan Center, an agency that provides educational and recreational programs for low- and moderate-income people in Bridgeport, and for $2,000 to Al's Angels, the Westport-based group that assists children and families impacted by serious illness, domestic violence and other challenges.
The money was donated at ceremonies on Feb. 19, the club said in a news release.
For the 28th year, the Junior Women's Club of Fairfield in December transformed the historic Burr Homestead into Santa's house for two days, drawing hundreds of families who paid admission to visit with the jolly old elf and partake of entertainment, games and goodies.
The Shehan Center will use its stipend to support its new JWC Girls Zone, an area devoted to mentoring girls 11 to 17. The club said it involved girls at the Shehan Center in November preparing craft materials for A Visit to Santa's House, the very event that would benefit them.
Upcoming visits to the center by JWC members will focus on topics such as how to dress for success; building skills for the future, such as prep school/college applications, interviews and resume writing; and the importance of proper nutrition and healthy cooking.
"The Cardinal Shehan Center is grateful to be selected as the partner organization with the Junior Women's Club of Fairfield," Terence O'Connor, executive director of the Shehan Center, said in the club's news release.
Open to women in Fairfield and surrounding towns, the Junior Women's Club is a nonprofit service organization. In addition to A Visit to Santa's House, its projects include a townwide spelling bee for fifth-graders and a fall Touch-a-Truck event to fund scholarships for high school students.
