Fairfield Warde wrestlers Charlie and Tim Kane were named Sports Persons of the Year for Fairfield by the Fairfield County Sports Commission. The two will be honored at the 11th annual Sports Night dinner on October 19 at the Greenwich Hyatt.

“They are very dedicated to what they do,” Shaughnessy said.

Indeed. Charlie Kane completed an undefeated season by wining the 138-pound class in the New England Wrestling Championships at North Andover, Mass., becoming the Mustangs' first even New England champion. Kane won four matches at the New England's to end with a 48-0 record. He also won the 138-pound divisions in the FCIAC, the Class L and the State Open tournaments.

“Charlie had an excellent year. He stayed consistent throughout the entire season,” said Shaughnessy after the New England matches. “He wrestled tough. We had a tough schedule and he wrestled a lot of tough matches and tough kids and he continued to give winning performances week in and week out. What he did this year, that's who Charlie is. He's very driven, very motivated, very grinding opponent and he performed at a very high level this season.”

Tim won four of five matches in the New England’s to finish in third place in the 126-pound division. Overall, Kane ended with a 48-1 record. He also won the FCIAC, the Class L and the State Open titles in the 126-pound division.

Both these kids have a very strong work ethic,” Shaughnessy said. “And they succeed in an individual sport where they don't have to depend on someone blocking for them or throwing a pass to them. They're the kind of kids that work hard, that train hard, that have learned the sport and can excel in a one-on-one environment.

“They're both a pleasure to have on the team. They are both very into wrestling and they take what they do very seriously. It's nice to have two successful leaders on the team.”
