Lancers, Mustangs girls basketball teams rolling

Notre Dame-Fairfield won a thriller, 44-42 over Joel Barlow on Jan. 20. Precious Montgomery led the Lancers with 12 points — coming on four 3-pointers — while Gabrielle Joseph and Taylor Ceballos each had 10. On Monday, ND-Fairfield defeated Stratford 66-48 behind Joseph’s 19 points. Brooke McCone added 11 points and Ceballos 10 for the Lancers, who improved to 11-3 overall and 7-0 in the SWC.
Shania Osborne scored 27 points and also grabbed 15 rebounds and has four blocks as Warde defeated Wilton 45-33 on Jan. 19. Sarah Cotto scored eight and Daja Polk had five points, four assists and four steals for the Mustangs, who qualified for the state tournament for the 24th consecutive time under head coach Dave Danko.
Warde then defeated Ridgefield 56-44 on Jan. 21 for its 10th straight win. Osborne led the way with 16 points while Lejla Markovic added 13 points and Sarah Cotto had eight. On Tuesday, the Mustangs defeated Darien 48-30 to improve to 11-1 overall and 8-0 in the FCIAC. Osborne had 21 points and Iliana Krasniqi had 10.
The Falcons rebounded on Monday night with a 66-21 win over Harding. Julia Pangallo had 17 points to lead Ludlowe while Brown and McKinnon each had 11. Regan Steed added seven points.
On Tuesday, the Falcons (8-4, 6-3 FCIAC) rolled past Central 57-30 behind 13 points each from Brown and McKinnon. Pangallo and Bridget O’Leary both had seven points.
The Notre Dame-Fairfield wrestling team defeated Barlow 42-30 on Jan. 20. Winners for the Lancers were Xavier Rojas (106 pounds), Clyde Auba (195), Hakim Fleming (285), Bill Kelly (220), Tavon Simpson (126), Nick Lemley (113) and Dylan Battle (145).
Ludlowe defeated McMahon 51-30 on Jan. 20 to improve to 7-3 on the season. Winners for the Falcons were: Zachary Taylor (113 pounds), Adam Arnaout (120), Austin Sherman (126), Bobby Clark (152), Marcus Sherrod (160), Chase Lind (170), Dominic Mastro (182), Lee Stenild-Johansen (195) and Billy Stapleton (285).
Warde rolled past New Canaan 65-15 on Jan. 20. Winners for the Mustangs were: Chris Murray (106), Keenan Yu (113), Alex Steele (126), Tim Kane (132), Jack Price (138), Kris Gjinaj (145), Michael Eaton (152), Tallis Santos (160), Matheus Riberto (170), John Ocana (220) and Alex Lobsenz (285).
Laura Dennigan scored the only goal for Notre Dame-Fairfield in a 9-1 loss to Simsbury on Jan. 20 at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Goaltender Rebecca Paine stopped 34 shots for the Lancers. ND-Fairfield rebounded with a 4-0 win over Masuk/Barlow as Kelly Kuryla, Alicia Beard, Alexys Ryan and Amanda McGeehan all scored for the Lancers. Paine made five saves in goal to record the shutout, her second this season. On Monday, ND-Fairfield defeated Trumbull/St. Joseph 4-2 to improve to 5-4-1 on the season. Emily Rowland scored twice for the Lancers, who also got goals from Dennigan and Alicia Beard. Paine made 21 saves in goal.
Notre Dame-Fairfield received goals from Brian Gallagher, Mike Antoniou and Mark Russo was it wasn’t enough in a 4-3 loss to Hamden on Jan. 20 at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Bill Scovill made 16 saves for the Lancers, who outshot Hamden 39-20. On Monday, ND-Fairfield defeated Glastonbury 4-2 to improve to 6-5 on the season. Mike Antoniou scored twice and Matt Russo and Tyler English had a goal and a assist. Other assists went to Brian Gallagher (two), Matt Carlotto (two). Scovill stopped 20 shots for the Lancers.
Jake Fuss recorded a three-goal hat trick in Fairfield co-op’s 4-0 win over Staples on Jan. 20 at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Sam Shepard also scored for the Mustangs, who improved to 6-1-1 and are the No. 1 ranked team in the state at the Division II level. Goaltender Mike Grace made 22 saves for Fairfield. Owen Emmendorfer had 2 assists and Carson Rush, Calvin Sharp and Rutger Galliard had single assists.
Fairfield Prep (2-5-1) held off West Haven 4-3 on Jan. 20 at the Wonderland of Ice. Chris Kral and Justin Blanchette both scored twice and had as assist for the Jesuits, who also received assists from Chris Brown, Devin Blanchette and Will Schlichtig. Goaltender Chris Ligas made 13 saves for Prep. The Jesuits out-shot West Haven 36-16.
Jesse McIntosh scored a season high 31 points and Jordan Pettway added 21 as Notre Dame-Fairfield rolled to a 74-50 win over Barlow on Jan. 20. The Lancers (8-2 overall, 3-0 SWC) got 10 points from Nori Davis Gio Gagnazzo, Tom Gerling and Ryan Keeley all had four points for ND-Fairfield. Colin Burke had eight rebounds and three blocks while Pettway had seven assists and three steals.
The Lancers then defeated Masuk 72-64 on Jan. 22. Nori Davis scored 26 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to led ND-Fairfield while Jordan Pettway added 13 points and Jesse McIntosh nine. On Tuesday, the Lancers (10-2, 5-0 SWC) got past Stratford 57-53 as Jordan Pettway had 14 and Jesse McIntosh and Nori Davis had 13 each.
Ludlowe defeated Wilton 59-52 on Jan. 22 to snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the FCIAC. Cole Prowitt-Smith scored 20 points while Mason Rush added 17 points and Greg Lawrence 10. On Tuesday, the Falcons defeated Central 56-36 as Frank Lumaj had 12 points, Cole Prowitt-Smith 11 and Adien Kudzy and Greg Lawrence each had 10. Ludlowe is now 6-4 on the season, 3-3 in the FCIAC.
Fairfield Prep (12-0) kept on rolling with a 93-65 victory over Hand on Tuesday. Matt Gerics had 24 points to led the Jesuits, who got 19 points from Rich Kelly, 13 from Pat Harding and 10 from Bobby Haskins.
On Tuesday, Prep (3-0) swam past ND-West Haven 102-79. The Jesuits 200-yard medley relay team of Liam Colleran, Kevin Lycon, Oliver Rus and Stanislav Yarmoussik won with a time of 1:43.93, Rus captured the 200 IM in 2:02.95 and the 100 butterfly in :57.19, Colleran won the 50 freestyle in :23.59 and the 100 backstroke in :55.32, Guido Balderrama won the 100 free in :50.42 and the 200 free relay team of Yarmoussik, Balderrama, Ben Fox and Martin Duffy won in 1:34.65. Andres Navarez won the diving with 203.25 points.
Greens Farms Academy sports roundup
The GFA wrestling team went against the Marvelwood School in Kent and the Woodhall School. Sophomore Sam Stuart of Fairfield went undefeated on the day, winning both of his matches by pin.
The Dragons girls basketball team went 2-0 last week, defeating the Millbrook School, 44-28, and the Westover School, 71-49, bringing their overall record to 7-4. Senior captain Caroline Lewis of Fairfield had two points, five rebounds, three blocks and two assists against Westover.
The Dragons girls squash team lost to Canterbury, 2-5. Senior Ingrid Backe of Fairfield defeated her opponent (8-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-7).
