Letter: Back entire budget for good of all

How has Fairfield benefited from our penny-wise but pound-foolish RTM?
Consider this: Recently, the Fairfield Public Library presented its budget to the RTM. They now operate based on a budget from 10 years ago. That's a budget based on 2004 technology in 2014.
Likewise, because of those cuts, the main and the branch (reportedly still the busiest branch in the state), have to share staffing and hours, but at what cost?
It seems that the number of annual visitors has dropped from 700,000 to 560,000. That's 140,000 peoplewho can no longer use the library because of hours and location. Pity.
Is that what the Fairfield Tax Payer Association had in mind -- limit access to a terrific free resource, to students, parents, single moms, single dads, empty-nesters, seniors and everyone in between?
This is just one line item of the hundreds that are on the RTM's chopping block for Monday, May 5.
We live in Fairfield for not only its outstanding schools, but for all of its services that we enjoy, including a fantastic library system. We must preserve all of what makes Fairfield a great town.
We need to invest wholly and consistently. One service should not yield to another. I ask my fellow RTM members to recognize that the budget presented is lean, it's been thoroughly reviewed and it meets our town's needs so we may thrive, not just exist. Please join me in supporting the entire budget, for the good of Fairfield and all of our residents.
