Letter: Hwang's character exceptional

We would like to voice our support for re-electing Tony Hwang as state representative from the 134th District this November.
We have known Tony Hwang for more than 10 years and think it's important to look not only at Tony's legislative record and accomplishments as a public official but also his character and role as a family man.
There has already been plenty of coverage on his legislative record, and we will only add that he has done a commendable job, particularly with his focus on jobs/economy, education and budget issues. Equally important, he is always visible around town, and constantly makes himself available to his constituents, which is an important role of a State Representative. He doesn't duck and hide. He loves interacting with people -- discussing their concerns, talking through issues and working out solutions to problems we face both at the local and state levels. He is a true representative of the people.
Outside of politics and on a more personal level, we can say that Tony knows how to balance his public service with his family responsibilities. Having lived in the same neighborhood with Tony for more than 10 years and having attended the same church and numerous community events in town over the years, we know his family well. He puts his wife, Grace, and kids, Christina and Peter, ahead of everything, which shows the type of dedicated family man he is. To us, character is the first and foremost criterion we consider in our elected officials. Tony is a truly decent person with a huge heart, but most importantly, he is not afraid to speak his mind and has always said he wants to do what's right for our community, not for politics. We believe that is the type of person we want representing our legislative interests in Hartford.
The bottom line: Tony is an extremely strong advocate for our town and is intimately involved in giving back to the community. Tony understands the dynamics of life in our town and county. He is fully engaged with the public because he has tremendous respect for Fairfield and all who live here. Tony is a tireless worker, whose active involvement gives him a genuine feel for the pulse of the town.
Tony Hwang is an asset to our community as a State Representative in Hartford. Let's keep him in office so he can continue his good work.
