Lifeguard coverage scaled back at Fairfield beaches as summer ebbs

As the summer season wanes and a new academic year is set to begin, lifeguard coverage at the town's public beaches is being scaled back.

The Recreation Department has announced this schedule:

Sasco and Southport beaches: No lifeguards on duty as of Wednesday this week

South Pine Creek Beach: No lifeguards on duty as of Monday this week.

Lake Mohegan Beach: Staffed with lifeguards through next Sunday. There will be no lifeguards on duty from Monday through Friday, Aug. 25-29. Lifeguards will be on duty again for Labor Day weekend, Saturday to Monday, Aug. 30-Sept. 1.

Penfield Beach: Staffed with lifeguards through Wednesday, Aug. 27, with a reduced swim area. There will be no lifeguards on duty Thursday and Friday, Aug. 28-29. Lifeguards will be on duty again for Labor Day weekend, but swimming areas will be reduced. The boathouse will also be open through Wednesday, Aug. 27, and closed Thursday and Friday, Aug. 28-29. The boathouse will be open weekends only Aug. 30-31 and Sept. 1, 6-7 and 13-14 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Jennings Beach: Staffed with lifeguards through Wednesday, Aug. 27, with a reduced swim area. There will be no lifeguards on duty Thursday and Friday, Aug. 28-29. Lifeguards will be on duty again for Labor Day weekend from Saturday, Aug. 31 to Monday, Sept. 1, but swimming areas will be reduced. The boathouse will also be open through Wednesday, Aug. 27, and closed Thursday and Friday, Aug. 28-29. The boathouse will be open weekends only Aug. 30-31 and Sept. 1, 6-7 and 13-14 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
