When Ludlowe senior Meredith McGann scored off a corner 7:24 into the game, she thought there would be several more goals scored by both teams Friday night at Taft Field.

But McGann's goal held up as the only score, and the Falcons field hockey team held on to defeat crosstown rival Warde 1-0.

"I thought it was going to be a higher scoring game because I know Warde has scored more this season against other teams," McGann said. "But we're been practicing scoring and that's what we've been focused on in practice, and we knew we could do it."

Though McGann's goal shows up in the box score as the game-winner, the Falcons' defense led Ludlowe to just its second win of the season.

Warde had 13 corners, including nine in the second half, and was unable to convert. Sophomore goalie Riley Thompson picked up the shutout for Ludlowe and had eight saves.

"It was very nerve-racking to have that many corners," Falcons head coach Cathy Hamill said. "But our defense held up and it shows we have some things to work on. Warde played a real good game."

Warde did have a chance to tie the game with 16:58 in regulation, but a shot by Warde forward Lindsay Adams that got past Thompson was waved off by the referees.

Adams lifted the ball, and it went off Thompson's glove, over her right shoulder and past the goal line But the ruling on the field was that the initial shot was lifted, and therefore was not legal.

"We let that first goal in and didn't get the call on the second goal and it got to us," said Warde head coach Jodi Shannon. "We're young, so we're still growing mentally, but hopefully this game will put things in perspective. Most of our forwards are sophomores and our midfielders are juniors, we just have to make sure they understand how to come back."

Ludlowe last defeated Warde in field hockey in 2006. The last two seasons, Warde won in overtime. And in 2007 and 2008, Warde and Ludlowe battled to a tie.

"Since I've been on this team we haven't beaten Warde," McGann said. "So as a senior, this is awesome."

Warde outshot Ludlowe 9-8, and Warde goalie Lindsey Lopes had five saves.

"Our team is a tight bunch, from seniors to freshmen," Hamill said. "They have a great momentum going into the later part of our season. They are so coachable, it's a delight to be with them."
