A 17-year-old Fairfield teen was charged with sixth-degree larceny Saturday after police said he stole a classmate's laptop from a bench at Sherman Green the day before.
The victim said he left his Macbook Pro unattended on a bench at the green and saw a boy he knew from Fairfield Ludlowe High School take it and leave the area. The owner said he didn't confront the alleged thief because he feared retaliation.
Police made several attempts to contact the suspect and his mother. When officers went to the suspect's house, his mother asked to speak to her son privately.
Later, the teen and his mother came to police headquarters and he allegedly admitted to taking the backpack containing the laptop but said they had disposed of it and believed it was now destroyed.
He was released on a promise to appear in juvenile court on Oct. 1.
