The U.S. Postal Service's local mail carriers will collect nonperishable food items on Saturday, May 11, as part of the National Association of Letter Carriers' annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive. Residents may leave them by the mailbox to be picked up for distribution to Operation Hope, a nonprofit organization that runs a homeless shelter in downtown Fairfield on Reef Road.

Operation Hope, based at 636 Old Post Road, has received pantry items through the food drive for the last 18 years.

The Fairfield letter carriers collected 44,000 pounds of food on 65 mail routes last year for Operation Hope, according to the association's website. Nationwide, more than 73 million pounds of food were collected.
