The fire-suppression system at the Shell gas station on the Post Road malfunctioned Thursday afternoon, spraying several startled customers with the powdery white fire retardant.

There was no fire.

Pumps at the station, 1139 Post Road, were to remain closed until management ascertains what activated the system.
