A Park Avenue man was charged with assault and other offenses after police said he punched his ex-girlfriend in the face Thursday afternoon.
Sunil K. Mehta, 45, faces charges of third-degree assault, second-degree harassment, second-degree criminal trespass and disorderly conduct in connection with the incident.
Mehta called his ex-girlfriend just before noon Thursday, according to the report, but because of the caller ID, did not pick up the phone. She then heard a noise in her garage and when she went to investigate, found Mehta there. Police said Mehta attacked the woman, pushing her against the wall, and they both fell to the ground. Then, in the garage hallway, he punched her in the face several times and tried to gouge her eyes, police said. She was able to break free, and hit the garage door opener. When the door opened, Mehta fled.
He was located a short time later driving on Kings Highway East and was taken into custody. Mehta was warned to have no more contact with the woman, but police said he tried calling her again while he was in the holding cell at police headquarters.
He was held on a $5,000 bond and was scheduled to appear Friday in Bridgeport Superior Court.
