A 68-year-old Bridgeport man was charged with third-degree criminal mischief after police said he damaged the door of a public transit bus with his cane Monday evening.

Robert Christensen, of Fairfield Avenue, Bridgeport, had been banned from riding the buses from the Milford Transit District, traveling the Coastal Link route, because of previous "poor behavior," according to the report. He tried to board one of the buses in front of 889 Post Road, and when the driver closed the door, he struck it with his cane, cracking the glass and causing $300 in damage, police said. He told officers he didn't realize it was a Milford bus because the vehicle's color scheme had been changed, and said he when he "tapped" the door he didn't realize it had been damaged.

He was released on a promise to appear Oct. 5 in Bridgeport Superior Court.
