Edward R. Bancroft, 57, of Southport Woods Drive, was charged with driving under the influence Sunday after an officer on patrol saw him roll through a stop sign and then cross over the double-yellow traffic line on Pequot Avenue, police said.

The officer was traveling east on the Post Road around 9:30 a.m., and as he passed Bancroft, who was westbound, the license plate reader alerted him to the fact that the car's registration had been suspended, according to the report. He began to follow Bancroft, who failed to stop at the stop sign at Pequot Avenue and the Old Post Road.

Bancroft failed field sobriety tests and was taken into custody.

He was also charged with operating with having a suspended registration, no insurance and failure to obey a stop sign. He was held on a $100 bond and is scheduled to appear Sept. 16 in Bridgeport Superior Court.
