Man charged with assault after dispute with wife

Desmond O'Brien, 52, of Jennings Road, was charged with third-degree assault and disorderly conduct Wednesday after an investigation into a complaint filed by his wife.

According to the report, O'Brien's wife came to headquarters Tuesday morning, allegedly detailing several years of abuse by her husband, including an incident May 19 when she said he pushed her into a coffee table, causing her to fall and hit the back of her neck on stairs leading to the kitchen. She said he threw the coffee table and was verbally abusive to her.

In 2005, police said, the wife had a temporary restraining order against O'Brien in another state.

He was released on a $25,000 bond and was scheduled to appear May 24 in Bridgeport Superior Court.
