Jeffrey Amante, 51, of Bridgeport, was charged Saturday night with third-degree burglary and third-degree criminal mischief after police said he trespassed at 270 Commerce Drive.
Police received a call from someone reporting the sound of footsteps on the building's third floor, which is supposed to be vacant. Officers arriving on the scene said they found Amante, who told them he is homeless. He reportedly told police he thought the building was abandoned.
Amante caused $200 in damage to the front door to gain entry, police said.
He was released on a promise to appear Sept. 6 in Bridgeport Superior Court.
