Louis Johnson, 44, of Washington Terrace, Bridgeport, was charged with sixth-degree larceny Tuesday night with trying to steal $67 worth of Dove body wash and deodorant from BJ's Wholesale Club, 40 Black Rock Turnpike.
He said he took the items in order to sell them so that he didn't have to sell drugs, police said. Johnson was released on a promise to appear Oct. 24 in Bridgeport Superior Court.
