A Fairfield man was charged with engaging police in pursuit after he allegedly drove 70 mph in a 25 mph zone in the Stratfield neighborhood early Sunday.

Anthony Maucieri, 20, of Church Hill Road, also was charged with possession of marijuana less than a half-ounce and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police said he had less than a gram of marijuana in the car and a glass pipe.

Police said Maucieri was spotted speeding on Stratfield Road near Church Hill Road about 2:33 a.m. Sunday in a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and disobeyed officers' attempts to pull him over. He sped through several stop signs and, when he arrived at Church Hill Road, he fled from his car and ran toward his house.

However, he failed to realize the car was still in gear, police said, and ran back to the vehicle, where officers placed him under arrest, according to the police report.
