A 47-year-old Bridgeport man took his mother to a downtown jewelry store Saturday afternoon and, according to police, helped himself to a $3,000 necklace belonging to another customer.
Anthony Frank, of Park Avenue in Bridgeport, was charged with third-degree larceny and released on a promise to appear Aug. 26 in Bridgeport Superior Court.
Frank brought his mother to Altan Jewelers, 1487 Post Road, to drop off a piece of jewelry for repair, police said. While there, another couple was bringing in some jewelry to sell to the store. The customer put those pieces on a counter and walked away to look at some other jewelry. At the point, police allege, that Frank pocketed the 18-karat gold-and-diamond necklace before leaving the store.
The customer noticed the necklace was missing, and told police that Frank and his mother were the only other people in the store at the time. Police contacted Frank's mother through the phone number left with the store and Frank agreed to meet officers in a supermarket parking lot.
He admitted to taking the necklace, according to the report, and turned it over to police. Security video from the store also showed Frank taking the necklace.
Police said since the jewelry store took responsibility and paid the customer for the necklace, even though it was missing, the necklace will be returned to the store as its property.
