A man and woman from Bridgeport were charged with shoplifting Thursday night at Kohl's department store, 290 Tunxis Hill Road.

Tonya Renee Shelton, 51, was charged with fifth-degree larceny and interfering with an officer, while Justin Secchiaroli, 31, was charged with conspiracy to commit fifth-degree larceny.

Police said Shelton was seen walking out of the store shortly after 8 p.m. with a shopping cart containing $716 in merchandise without paying and headed toward a car with a male passenger in the parking lot. Police said Shelton tried to enter the vehicle as a patrol car arrived on the scene, but was unable to do so because the door was locked.

As an officer told her to put her hands behind her back, Shelton ran around the car and then pushed the officer away as she was being placed under arrest, according to the report.

Secchiaroli admitted knowing about the theft and that he was with Shelton and had planned to purchase the stolen goods, described in the report as "Nike shoes," in the parking lot, according to police.

Shelton posted a $100 bond and is scheduled to appear March 6 in Bridgeport Superior Court. Secchiaroli was released on a promise to appear in court March 6.
