The ice storm wreaked havoc with electric service in Fairfield and area communities this morning, with more than 1,400 outages in town reported at one point.

By 2:30 p.m., only 19 outages were reported by United Illuminating.

An ice coating nearly one-half-inch thick coated utility lines earlier today, and there were numerous reports of downed wires and at least one transformer explosion.

The number of outages yo-yoed throughout the day, as service disruptions were repaired and new problems were reported.

As of noon, 493 customers in town were reported as having lost power, according to United Illuminating figures. At 10 a.m. as many as 1,407 local customers had no electric service. About an hour earlier, there were about 260 without power, but at about 7 a.m. 1,114 Fairfielders had service disrupted, according to UI.
