At 5:51 p.m. on Sunday night, the Fairfield Emergency Communications Center received a report of a multi-vehicle accident at Chambers Street and Johnson Drive with one vehicle on its side with an occupant trapped inside. Fairfield Fire Department's Car 3, Engines 1 and 2, Rescue 1 and Ladder 2 were dispatched and arrived at the scene within 3 minutes to find the situation as described, with a red Jeep Cherokee on its side alongside of a black Jeep Cherokee with heavy front end damage and air bags deployed.

Fire crews began by securing the scene and treating the patients, eventually cutting the roof from the Cherokee in order to extricate the driver pinned inside.

According to Assistant Chief Doug Chavenello who served as incident commander at the scene, two people were transported to St. Vincent's Emergency Room by AMR, and a third person refused medical attention. Fire personnel continued to secure hazards at the scene until 6:30 p.m. when Engine 2 was the last Fairfield Fire Department unit to clear.
