New spin: Trek bike store bought by Branford company

A Branford bicycle retailer has acquired the former Trek Bicycle Store in the Brick Walk shopping center downtown and is expanding the shop's product line and workforce.
Zane's Cycles announced it has taken over the 5,000-square-foot store in the 1215 Post Road shopping complex and is adding three more bicycle brands to the existing Trek line, plus additional sales representatives and maintenance technicians.
Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Chris Zane, founder and president of Zane's Cycles, said in a news release his company has a Fairfield County customer base that had been traveling to the Branford shop, and Zane's had been looking for a location in the area for about six months.
"The opportunity to acquire Trek Bicycle Store of Fairfield was the perfect solution," he said.
Zane's carries a wide array of bicycles, equipment, accessories and attire and has an on-site service department. The 32-year-old company said the expansion into Fairfield is part of its strategy to become a "super-regional source in the bicycling industry."
The company has added five more sales representatives to the store's existing two-person sales staff and three additional service technicians to what had been a one-person department.
Including manager Sam Connor, the Fairfield store now has a staff of 13.
In addition to the store's existing Trek brand, Zane's added the Specialized, Electra and Raleigh lines of bicycles. It also will carry accessories and clothing for cyclists ranging from novices to professionals.
Chris Zane founded the company in 1982. Zane's 15,000-square-foot Branford store is about three times larger than the Fairfield shop.
Bicycles available from Zane's range from children's bikes starting at about $250 to the Trek Madone 7.9 carbon-frame racing bike that retails for more than $15,500, according to the company's website.
