JOANNE DUMAS

Joanne Dumas of Del Ray Beach, Fla., died Jan. 14, 2010, at Hospice by the Sea in Boca Raton, Fla., in the company of her sons.

She was born in Milwaukee, Wisc., in 1936 to the late Beatrice and Joseph Librizzi of Bronxville, N.Y., and Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

She was married in 1957 to Jack W. Dumas and resided with her family for many years in Irvington-On-Hudson in New York. Her final residence was in Del Ray Beach, Fla., with many dear friends. A loving mother and devoted grandmother, she will be remembered by her friends and family for her passion for photography and the countless memories that she created for so many with her photographs.

Dumas was preceded in death by her brother, John A. Librizzi, and her ex-husband, Jack W. Dumas.

She is survived by her four sons and their spouses, James and Kris Dumas of Park City, Utah, John and Andrea Dumas of Derwood, Md., Jeffrey and Stephanie Dumas of Easton (formerly of Fairfield), and Joseph Dumas of Irvington, N.Y.; her grandchildren, Andre, Hans Lucas and Boden Dumas, Zachary, Ella and Lila Dumas, Brittney, Leah and Kyleigh Dumas, Talen, Caden and Lily Dumas, Gray, Georgia and Gillian Larson; as well as her nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Notre Dame of Easton Church. Interment will follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield.

The Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road, Fairfield, has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice by the Sea, 1531 West Palmetto Park Road, Boca Raton, FL 33486.

KALMAN J. MEDVE

Kalman "Kal" J. Medve, a father, grandfather and husband, died Jan. 9, 2010, in the presence of his son and daughter, at Mayflower Place Nursing Center.

Born on April 11, 1918, in Fairfield to Elizabeth (Kovacs) Medve and Kalman Medve, he was the proud son of Hungarian immigrants who came to this country in 1906.

He attended Fairfield schools, achieving much success at Roger Ludlowe High School as president of his class, and captain of the football team. He received the Father's Club Shield for "Outstanding Senior Boy" in 1937, and was awarded scholarships to Bryant College, where he graduated with a bachelor of science degree in business. Medve served in the U.S. Army for five years, stationed in Aruba during World War II with the rank of captain, and continued with the National Guard for 10 years.

He began his career with Prudential Insurance in Bridgeport, where he became a staff manager for many years. He won numerous awards during his career, and went on to earn the status of CLU, (Chartered Life Underwriters) -- he was the first in his branch to achieve this designation. Medve continued his insurance career with North American Reassurance Co., a Swiss company based in New York City.

He retired to his beloved town of Falmouth, Mass., where he spent many years in his house on Little Pond. His passion for Cape Cod was endless, and he never lost his fascination for the beauty of the ocean.

Medve was extremely dedicated to his children, and taught them the value of a good education and in making a difference by helping those less fortunate. He had a passion for swimming and for sports, especially football. He was a member of St. Anthony's Church in East Falmouth, Mass., a volunteer at Falmouth Hospital and delivered Meals on Wheels for years to shut-ins in Falmouth.

He is survived by his children, Kenneth Medve and daughter-in-law, Nadine (Eckert) Medve of Fairfield, and Karen Medve and son-in-law, Len Plucinski Jr. of Brewster, Mass.; grandchildren, Kyle Medve of Fairfield, and Luke and Alison Plucinski of Brewster; his stepchildren, Tom Duffy of New Hampshire, Margi Gunn and Tim Duffy of Idaho; his step-grandson, Sean Revanaugh of Falmouth; a sister-in-law, Elsie Rahrig of Bridgeport; and several nieces and nephews in the New England area.

Medve was predeceased in 1975 by his wife, Marian (Rahrig) Medve. He later married Marguerite (Duffy) Medve, with whom he spent many happy years, and Eleanor (Babe Beitner) Medve, both, along with his brother, Bertram Medve, and sisters, Marguerite Baranson and Elizabeth Sales, also predeceased him.

His family wishes to express their deep gratitude to the staff at Mayflower Place, the VNA, to Hospice of Cape Cod and to Dr. Kascia Moskal for her unending compassion in the care of Medve.

Visitationtook place Jan. 14 at the Morris, O'Connor, and Blute Funeral Parlor on Long Pond Road in Yarmouth, Mass. A memorial service at the First Congregational Church in Fairfield took place Jan. 16.

Donations may be made to Good Hope Adoption Services, Inc. 708 Route 134, South Dennis, MA, a nonprofit organization for orphaned children.

ADONIA R. STARZYK

Adonia R. Starzyk, 95, of Fairfield, died Jan. 18, 2010, in the company of her sisters.

Born Feb. 13, 1914, in Springfield, Mass., she was a daughter of the late Paul and Antonia Starzyk.

Starzyk had resided in New York City for 60 years prior to moving to Bridgeport 15 years ago and then Fairfield in January of 2009. A woman who was very much involved in the arts, she was an amateur artist and loved to play the violin and piano. She also sang in several church choirs in New York City and the Oratorio Choir in Bridgeport. Her kind and loving nature will always be treasured by her family and friends.

Survivors include two sisters, Eugenia Reale and her husband, Art of Westport, and Dorothy Starzyk of Fairfield; one brother, Michael Starzyk and his wife, Galy of Westport; and seven nieces and one nephew.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Starzyk and Cecelia Claire, and one brother, Stanley Starzyk.

Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23, at Assumption Church, 98 Riverside Ave., Westport. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends in the Harding Funeral Home, 210 Post Road E., Westport, Saturday from 9 to 9:45 a.m.
