A 21-year-old Andrassy Avenue man was charged with driving under the influence after police said he struck a pedestrian with his car early Sunday at Longfellow Avenue's intersection with Castle Avenue.

The impact of the 1:30 a.m. crash propelled the pedestrian through the windshield of the car driven by Chad Reck.

Officers dispatched to the scene found Reck's car stopped just north of the intersection of Longfellow and Castle avenues, police said.

Fire and police personnel worked quickly to remove the injured pedestrian -- who was not identified as of Monday -- from the car, police Sgt. Suzanne Lussier said. The victim was conscious, she said, and taken to St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport for treatment.

The initial investigation found that Reck was heading north on Longfellow Avenue when he hit the pedestrian, who was crossing the street.

Reck was given field sobriety tests at the scene, which police said he failed. He was taken into custody and released on a $1,000 bond. Reck is scheduled to appear Feb. 5 in Bridgeport Superior Court.

The accident remains under investigation.
