Pickens' Perspective: FCIAC playoffs start today
Published 1:07 am, Friday, October 30, 2009
It`s playoff time.
The regular season in every sport, but football, is history. The county playoffs are here and will bleed into the states.
This year could be a successful year for the town teams in the playoffs. Ludlowe and Warde have combined for four FCIAC playoff teams that will start play in the next four days. I think it is appropriate to breakdown each team`s FCIAC playoff potential. (NOTE: Ludlowe and Warde girls soccer teams have both each qualified for FCIACs. Due to late ending games games on Thursday, neither has a set schedule yet. For more information on their games visit blog.ctnews.com/pickens)

Final Record, Seed: 6-3-3-1, sixth
First round opponent: at No. 3 Greenwich, today,
Odds of winning FCIAC: 50-1
Breakdown: The Mustangs have reached the FCIAC playoffs for the first time since they were Fairfield High School in 2004. Warde played a 4-3, overtime thriller with Greenwich on Oct. 10, falling to the Cardinals. The Mustangs have had trouble scoring goals of late, but could bring the confidence of that game into the Greenwich game today. However, if Warde gets by Greenwich, it will have to deal with New Canaan or Ridgefield then undefeated Darien lurks.
Prediction: Loses to Greenwich today.

Final Record, Seed: 16-2, second
First round opponent: vs. No. 7 seed Danbury, Tuesday,
Odds of winning FCIAC: 5-1
Breakdown: This team undoubtedly has the best odds of any to win the FCIAC. Ludlowe will play three home games, including a rematch showdown with Darien if it makes it to the FCIAC finals next Saturday. Ludlowe has lost to No. 3 seeded Ridgefield, but in front of a home crowd, I think the Falcons will win in the semis. If Ludlowe can get to the finals, all bets are off.
Prediction: Loses in FCIAC finals to Darien.
Another 2-0 week boosts the record up. I nailed the Ludlowe/McMahon game almost perfectly. Trinity Catholic scored one more time and played a closer game with Warde than I thought it would. Warde still managed to exit victoriously. The town teams probably won`t fare so well tonight.
St. Joseph (5-1) at Warde (4-2), Tetreau/Davis Field, tonight, 7 p.m.
The Hogs/Cadets or whatever they call themselves are coming off of a relative throttling at the hands of New Canaan on Saturday afternoon. The score would not indicate that, but New
Canaan led comfortably for the majority of the game. Warde has played inconsistently since its win against
Wilcox Tech, and that is not a good thing when a top-four FCIAC team comes calling. The Mustangs will honor the 50th anniversry of Andrew Warde`s undefeated season tonight, they might want to
channel some of that success in their game tonight. They`ll need it. Pick: St. Joseph 45, Warde 7.
Staples (6-0) at Ludlowe (3-3), Taft Field, tonight, 7 p.m.
Ludlowe competed with Staples a year ago, falling 8-7. This year should be a
different story. Staples did lose its quarterback, Brandon Pacilio, to a broken ankle at Harding
on Saturday, and the Falcons have been playing great defense of late. I
still think Staples is going to roll. Pick: Staples 35, Ludlowe 13.
Last week`s record: 2-0. Year-to-date: 9-3.
