For more than 40 years, Holy Cross Catholic Church has celebrated its parishioners' heritage with a "Polka Picnic" each summer.

This year, parishioners had a significant hallmark to celebrate as well -- the 100th anniversary of the parish's founding -- and the Sunday afternoon event drew a crowd of more than 700 people to the Tahmore Drive parish.

The picnic featured lots of picnic foods, including traditional Slovenian ethnic offerings like kielbasa, as well as a raffle with 90 donated items, the Polka Quads band, dancing, children's activities and homemade baked goods.

A highlight was the dedication of a plaque to the Rev. Aloysius Hribsek, naming the church's great hall the Father Hribsek Hall. The priest was instrumental in moving the church from the site of its founding in the West End of Bridgeport to its current home, in 1972. A stained-glass window from the original sanctuary has been incorporated into the hall.
