An observant neighbor thwarted an apparent drug deal Wednesday evening.

The incident took place around 5 p.m. when a Halley Avenue resident saw a black BMW pull up to the street's dead end and then two men got out of the car. The men appeared to be hiding something under a board or rock, then got back in the car and drove away.

After they left, the nearby resident went out to the site and found what the men apparently hid -- 18 small bags of marijuana. The neighbor tossed the bags into a drain culvert, police said.

About 15 minutes later, the black BMW was back, followed by a red car. The two men, joined by a third in the second car, made a "hand-to-hand" exchange, according to the report, and then begin rooting through the mulch at the end of the street where the drug cache had been hidden.

The neighbor then called police, but the three men were gone by the time officers arrived. The marijuana was retrieved from the culvert, police said, and taken to Police Department headquarters to be destroyed.
