Jairo Martinez, a Fairfield College Preparatory School senior from Bridgeport, has been chosen as a Gates Millennium Scholar and will receive a scholarship funded through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The Gates Millennium Scholars Program is the nation's largest minority scholarship program and is funded by a $1.6 billion grant from the foundation formed by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife.
In a news release, Prep said Martinez is a native Colombian whose parents do not speak English, and he has overcome obstacles to become a summa cum laude student. He plans to attend Columbia University and pursue studies in neuroscience and psychology.
