A benefit party organized by the Southport Racquet Club raised more than $5,000 for three nonprofits affected by Hurricane Sandy, including the nearby Trinity Episcopal Church, the club announced.

The club planned to distribute procedes of the Dec. 7 block party at its Old Post Road complex to the church and to Fairfield-based Operation Hope and the American Red Cross.

Operation Hope, which operates shelters and a food pantry, and the American Red Cross saw increases in requests for aid in the wake of Sandy.

Severe flooding at the church destroyed its four furnaces and ground-floor electrical system and damaged its nursery school, library and offices.
