Matthew C. Battista, 23, of Bennett Street, Bridgeport, was charged with sixth-degree larceny Thursday after he allegedly took $261 worth of groceries from Super Stop & Shop, 1160 Kings Highway Cutoff, without paying -- planning to use the food to bake a cake for his actress wife, according to the police report.

While store employees were on the phone reporting the incident to police, Battista got into a car and drove off, cutting through the nearby McDonald's parking lot and headed east toward Bridgeport, police said. He was stopped by officers on the Post Road near Grasmere Avenue.

He did not have a receipt for the groceries, and told police he wanted to make a cake for his wife, who is an actress on a cruise ship, according to the report.

He was released on a promise to appear Jan. 14 in Bridgeport Superior Court.
