"The mixed use in the downtown area has really been a positive," TPZ Commissioner Seth Baratz said of the application from Brick Walk Associates, LLC, to build the three apartments atop 1275 Post Road. The project won approval at the TPZ meeting last week.
Baratz said the exterior design by architect Jack Franzen will harmonize with the existing structure. "Residences over commercial is viewed as a positive in the downtown district," he said.
The two-bedroom apartments add "life and a valuable component to the downtown," Commissioner James Kennelly said. "The design is attractive, and not looming."
The two apartments facing the Post Road would encompass 1,000 square feet, while the third apartment in the back of the addition would be 870 square feet.
The commission also agreed to reduce the number of required parking spaces for the three units from six to three.
John Fallon, the lawyer representing the applicant, told the commission that while six parking spaces are allocated for residents of the new units, the residents of the existing Brick Walk apartments generally don't use more than one parking space per apartment.
