Hundreds flocked to Congregation Beth El's grounds to savor the first Southern New England Kosher BBQ Championship and Festival.

Co-chaired by Don Sharbin and Warren Rockmacher, the event featured 30 barbecue teams, eating contests, music, a kids' play zone, activities and artisan vendors offering everything form barbecue equipment to homemade crafts.

To gain entry, attendees made donations or dropped off canned goods for Operation Hope's food pantry and shelters.

Sanctioned by the New England BBQ Society, the contest offered trophies for Best Brisket, Best Ribs, Best Chicken and Best Chili. A panel of judges as well as attendees sampled and voted on their favorites among barbecue teams with names like Wandering Que, Rubdiculous, Breaking BBQ, Flaming Fleish and Kiss My BBQ.
