The 50 most valuable motor vehicles in Fairfield, according to the 2011 grand list, may be notable for what's not found -- any American models, unless dump trucks and campers are counted.

Local developer Louis Ceruzzi Jr. owns one of the four Bentleys in the top-50 highly assessed vehicles to go along with his Ferrari, but others at the top of the list include 12 Mercedes, 10 Porsches, three Aston Martins, nine Ferraris, a Maserati, an Audi, a Rolls Royce and two Range Rovers.

Motor vehicles were a bright spot in the town's grand list of taxable property for 2011, showing a $34 million increase for a total of $479 million.

The motor vehicle grant list for 2010 was $447 million.

"Fairfield's a microcosm of America," Assessor Don Ross said. "As the economy seems to be stabilizing, perhaps many people who had postponed vehicle purchases are now finally replacing old or worn-out vehicles."

According to Ross, a recent report by the National Automobile Dealers Association shows that overall U.S. vehicle sales grew by 14 percent from 2010 to 2011.

"This consumer confidence is not only reflected in new vehicle sales, but in used vehicle sales as well," he said.

At the end of last year, NADA reported many used car values stayed the same or even increased from 2010 to 2011.

"Prices are driven by supply and demand. When prices of normally depreciating vehicles stay the same or even increase, that's a sign of strengthening demand," Ross said.

And Fairfield's not alone, Ross said.

"Many Connecticut municipalities have experienced increases in their motor vehicle grand lists from 2010 to 2011," Ross said. "Hopefully, these increases are a sign that our local and national economies are recovering from the depths of what's come to be known as the Great Recession."

In Fairfield, there are 151 motor vehicles with an assessed value of $50,000 or more.

Heavy on foreign luxury cars, there are two 2011 Cadillac Escalades as well as a sprinkling of Mack, Peterbilt or Kenworth commercial trucks in the 2011 list of vehicles assessed at more than $50,000.
