Russell Speeder's Car Wash makes a splash on Villa Ave.

The former site of Villa Ave. Car Wash is again turning out shiny vehicles with the opening of Russell Speeder's Car Wash last week.
Michael Shullman, owner, stood in the parking lot on Friday as he watched a stream of cars and trucks enter the site on the third day of free car washes being offered to celebrate the opening.
"They're still going strong every day," said Shullman of New Canaan.
Shullman renovated the 3,737-square-foot car wash, built in 1962 on the corner of Villa Avenue and Greenfield Street, after signing a long-term lease with property owner Tunxis Hill Associates.
Russell Speeder's was founded in 1963 by Shullman's grandfather, Herman Shullman. The Norwalk-based business has several other car washes in Connecticut, including venues in Norwalk, Stamford, Milford and Shelton. It also owns five outlets in the Midwest and two branches in Florida, according to its website.
Villa Ave. Car Wash, owned and operated by the Melko family for almost 50 years, closed abruptly in the spring.
Hours for Russell Speeder's Car Wash, 620 Villa Ave., are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.
