Sacred Heart University's Theatre Arts Program will present four performances of the musical "Spring Awakening" Thursday, April 19, through Sunday, April 22, at the school's Edgerton Center for the Performing Arts, 5151 Park Ave.

The play, featuring the book and lyrics by Steven Sater, music by Duncan Sheik and based on the R-rated play by Frank Wedekind, takes its inspiration from a work of literature once banned from the stage because of to its depiction of teenage self-discovery, according to a university news release.

The story, set in late 19th-century Germany, involves a male and female teen dealing with puberty who eventually meet in a private place in the woods by accident.

The musical is directed by Jerry Goehring, the center's executive director, and choreographed by Simone DePaolo with musical direction by Leo P. Carusone.

Reserved tickets are $22 for adults, $15 for university faculty and staff and senior citizens and $10 for students with ID.
