A Sherman School fifth-grader spelled his way to the championship of the annual town Spelling Bee sponsored by the Junior Women’s Club of Fairfield.

Aryan Iyer won the crown of the May 18 event by correctly spelling “jealousy.” Colin Mitchell of Stratfield School was the second-place winner and Jonas Mendez of Mill Hill School was third.

The bee, which took place at Roger Ludlowe Middle School, pits fifth-graders from schools across town in the spell-a-thon.

The top three winners received award medals and prizes. All participants also received JWC award certificates and goody bags.

“The Junior Women’s Club of Fairfield was excited to once again host the townwide Spelling Bee, where our town’s fifth-graders share the fruits of their hard work in class and at home,” Tanya Annuncio, the event’s co-chairwoman, said in a statement. “Boy, can these students spell!”
