Downtown Fairfield retailers rolled out the red carpet and popped corks for shoppers Thursday evening, part of the "Shop & Stroll" promotion organized by the town and Fairfield Chamber of Commerce.

Select retailers, like Apricot Lane, the Fairfield University Bookstore, Flip Flop Shop and La Moda, extended their store hours, set out platters of wine, cheese, crackers and baked goods, and offered discounts to draw people downtown.

Other diversion also were planned. The bookstore, for example, set up a facepainting station and hosted Habitat for Humanity representatives who conducted a fundraiser raffle.

The Shop & Stroll activities, combined with the mild spring night, made for a festive atmosphere along the Post Road, which then spilled into downtown's many restaurants.
