A woodsy aroma wafted through Pequot Library as youngsters gathered last Friday to learn how to craft snowshoes from local forest materials -- just in advance of more fresh snow Monday.

Led by Connecticut Audubon Society naturalist Colleen Noyes, the workshop provided a brief history of the gear and showed youngsters how to construct them from white pine branches and twine. The branches, gathered from the nature sanctuaries surrounding the Audubon property in northern Fairfield, were selected for their pliability.

More than a dozen groups participated in the workshop.
