A series of Saturday afternoon dance classes for special-needs students of all ages is scheduled to begin next month in Southport.

The 10-session program will incorporate ballet and creative movement, and students will be divided into two groups by age, sponsors said.

The program is scheduled to begin Feb. 11 in the Giant Steps School gymnasium and is open to all special needs students, male and female.

In addition to the 10 classes, the program will culminate with a stage performance, sponsors said in a news release.

Weekly sessions for elementary and early-teen students are planned from 2 to 3 p.m.; sessions for teens and adults are planned from 3 to 4 p.m.

The program aims to engage students in the creative process while using a structured format to teach basic poses and skills based on ballet and modern dance, according to the release. It also aims to foster socialization, imagination and communication while building self-esteem.

Giant Steps School is a 309 Barberry Road, Southport.

The cost is $150. All students will have the chance to participate in the final stage performance, according to the news release.
