Stop & Shop rolls out new Fairfield gas station

The new Stop & Shop gas station at the corner of Villa Avenue and Tunxis Hill Road has opened for business.
Motorists with a Stop & Shop card can accumulate points toward discounts on gasoline -- 10 cents for every 100 points based on store purchases.
The site for many years had been the home of a Mobil station, which closed several years ago and was demolished in October. The former gas station had a convenience store and service bays, but the Stop & Shop station has only a kiosk for the cashier and bathrooms. There are five bays with 10 gas pumps.
In 2005, the Mobil station's owner had successfully opposed a plan by Stop & Shop to open a gas station in a section of its own parking lot, across the street from Mobil. After that application was denied, a bank office instead was built on the site proposed for the gas station.
When Stop & Shop took control of the former Mobil property this year, opposition to the new gas station during Town Plan and Zoning Commission hearings in April came from two owners of nearby gas stations. Their arguments, however, failed to dissuade the TPZ from approving the project.
